Weighing the Benefits of Exhibiting at Trade Shows

At some point in time, every company that manufactures a product or provides a service will likely consider whether or not it’s in their best interests to exhibit at industry trade shows.  If you look hard enough, you can probably find an exhibition for just about anything imaginable … from toys to tools to vehicles to electronics to … well, you get the picture.

So why are trade shows important?  The main concept behind trade shows is that they’re targeted towards a specific industry or market, and you’re sharing your products and/or services with a group of like-minded people.  Quite simply, the people who attend trade shows already have an interest in what you do!  This interaction on the show floor can help you build the new relationships needed to expand a company’s industry presence.  Remember the old saying, “People buy from people, not from companies”.

But are there other advantages?  Of course!  Trade shows also give you the opportunity to check out the competition, see what new products/technologies are available, and in many cases gives you the chance to meet with your Sales Representatives (or even existing customers if you’re lucky).

In order to weigh the benefits, however, we also have to look at the downside.  As you guessed, the number one reason that companies give for not exhibiting at a trade show is cost.  Let’s face it, trade shows can be expensive.  Not only do you have the cost of the booth space itself plus the furnishings (carpet, chairs, etc.), in most cases you also have to factor in travel (airfare, hotel, etc.) and employee time out of the office.  Unless the show is nearby, many companies feel that the cost is too prohibitive.  Ultimately, in the end, every company will have to make their own decision on whether or not exhibiting at a trade show is a worthwhile endeavor for their organization.
